We’re excited to introduce our latest Art Curation Artist feature Emma Tindale. Emma Tindale is a self taught painter, interested in depicting the human form through pose and movement.
Her paintings are an examination of the human body and natural movement that we all recognise and execute. She paints subjects that offer a notion of familiarity, allowing viewers to recognise common and simple features, expressions or gestures. She draws inspiration from diverse sources such as high fashion photography, queer icons and old editorial photoshoots from the 80s and 90s in which models contort their figures and elongate their form with ease.
Emmas has created three exclusive pieces for RAINBOW STUDIOS.
Jordy, congratulations on the opening of your debut Sydney solo exhibition 'Second Ten'! How do you feel?
Thank you - I feel really good, we had such a nice opening night, the paintings look beautiful in the space and it's just good vibes and flow with you at Rainbow. We all work hard but it's so fun and the culmination and ceremony of the opening is important for reflection, integration and connection and feedback with the audience.
What does 'Second Ten' mean to you?
The title is about me being in my second decade of working as a painter. There's the thinking that it takes 10,000 hours to master something or ten years of consistency in a practice or a business just to get somewhere with it. For me it feels like an ownership of this time, a declaration, a change of season, a look to the future. I've done a lot over this decade - graduating, getting married, having two children, evolving my art and consistently building a career and showing every year. I was taught to honour and celebrate milestones and it's exciting to be heading into a new phase.
How does Sydney compare to Perth for you personally and within the art world?
Sydney is a joy - it's sparkly and beautiful, I love the birds and bats and jungly roots sticking out of rock faces, being on the ferry, the humidity, all the contrasts to Perth. I love the ocean and our lifestyle West-side, the size and ease suits me and is great for creativity, but that comes with disconnection from a wider arts community and an art-valuing population which is hard for the soul. Perth is a good place to make art and Sydney is a good place to show it! I intend for my "art world" to include more projects and exhibitions that require interstate and overseas travel, with great people.
What is on the horizon for you and your art practice for the rest of 2024 and is there anything exciting planned for 2025?
I've launched a short video about my art practice and the Second Ten series with a production group called Folklore (which is on the Rainbow website and our socials), I'm working on some commissions, I've got Fremantle Design Week coming up next month in WA (October), some collaborations in the works, possibly a solo show in Noosa next year and some travel.
If you could describe the RAINBOW STUDIOS community in three words what would they be?
Progressive, upbeat, aesthetes x
